Deployment and Connection of Equipment (VenusOBEM)
(Sep.24-Oct.17, 1999; "Kairei" cruise)

Kaiko

"Kaiko", a remotely operated vehicle(ROV), used for the deployment and interconnection with Branching unit.
Aproach

Aproaching to the equipment (VenusOBEM).
10:29 AM, Oct.1, 1999 (Kaiko Dive #130)
Drum before unroll Drum after unroll Unstable Cable Drum
Cable drum (reel) was not stable enough because of too light weight after unrolling the cable.
It was judged that the cable connection with the branching unit should be carried out after stabilizing the cable drum.

Manipulator handling Electrode Equipment after Electrode Deployment
Electrodes were pulled out using the manipulator of ROV, and the cables were stretched to get the span between electrodes.

Stablized Cable Drum

Cable Drum was stabilized using "S" hooks and lead weights, in another dive (Kaiko Dive #131).
Connection with Branching Unit

ROV connectors at the Junction Box of Branching Unit.
After stabilizing the Cable Drum, the interconnection with the Branching Unit was accomplished.
Then, the cable power was supplied from the land station and the operation of each equipment was inspected. There was no defect in operation.
